Besides appointments, 60 percent of transactions can now be handled by mail, online, or at self-service stations. This means that you will need to set aside time in advance to make an appointment.
Getting a driver’s license
Getting a driver’s license appointment is the first step in renewing your license. To get a license, you must have a Social Security Number (SSN). If you don’t have one, you must contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) and ask them to send you one. If your SSN isn’t available, the SOS will accept various documents such as your driver’s license.
To get a driver’s license in Michigan, you will need to take a knowledge test that will measure your knowledge of the laws and safe driving practices. Many residents have complained about long wait times at their local branch office. In response, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has asked for $25 million to hire more staff and offer overtime pay. Getting a REAL ID
In Michigan, getting a REAL ID appointment at the secretary of state’s office is simple. In-person appointments can be made in about 30 minutes or less. You must present a valid state ID card or Michigan driver’s license, along with your birth certificate or passport. In addition, you must have an approved citizenship document.
If you are homeless, you might not have a permanent Michigan address. However, if you have a family member who lives in the state, you can use their name and address. The REAL ID Act was passed in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The goal of the act is to make all government IDs more secure and more easily authenticated. It is illegal to drive without a valid license in the state. A late renewal will result in a seven-dollar late fee. For these reasons, you should make an appointment to renew your license at the SOS office as early as possible.
The fee for renewing your license at the secretary of state office will vary depending on the type of license you are applying for. A standard license will cost $18, while an enhanced license will cost about $130.
